“No matter how they choose to live, they both die at the end.”

Plot Overview:

This novel follows our two main characters, Mateo and Rufus, who both get alerted by the Death Cast, an association that alerts people when they will be dying, that they will be passing away within the next 24 hours. Mateo, shy and reserved, and Rufus, bold and impulsive, cross paths and a heartbreakingly beautiful story begins. Together, the two vow to make the best of their last day alive and so begins an amazing tale of friendship, love, and living life to the fullest.

My review:

Overall, I would give this novel 4.5/5 stars. This book had me gripped from the first chapter, and was so captivating that I was able to finish it in one sitting. I loved the character development throughout the book, as well as all of the side characters and background. My favorite part of the novel was how Silvera was able to effectively develop Rufus and Mateo’s relationship, and it was crafted incredibly from beginning to end. This novel is the perfect example of “seize the day” or “live life to the fullest” being captured in a book. The ending was phenomenal albeit sad, and the essence of this remarkable story is unforgettable. The only reason I wouldn’t give it five stars is that the story moved slowly in some parts and a few of the side plots were left unresolved. Altogether, I enjoyed this book immensely and I look forward to reading more of Adam Silvera’s work.
